CCC LGBTQ+ Milestones

1972
Instructor Dan Allen from City College of San Francisco's English Department develops one of the first gay literature courses in the country.

1989
City College of San Francisco establishes the first Gay and Lesbian Studies Department in the United States.

2005
City College of San Francisco establishes the Queer Resource Center, a space for LGBTQ+ students run by volunteers and students.

2009
Palomar College Pride Center opens a physical space.

2011
AB 620, also known as the Equality and Equal Access in Higher Education Act, amends the Education Code to encourage (but not require) CCC campuses to collect aggregate data on sexual orientation and gender identity of students and staff; and to designate a staff point person "to address the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender faculty, staff, and students." The law also revises the definition of gender to include “gender expression” for purposes of the Equity in Higher Education Act.

2011
Fullerton College’s Cadena Cultural Center, originally established to support Latino students and later Transfer students, adds LGBTQ+ programming to its annual events.

2012
The Student Senate for CCC hosts the first conference of the Spectrum Caucus at San Francisco City College in May.

2013
The CCC Admissions Application adds optional SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity) questions in September. (The questions do not appear to minors.)

2014
AB 860 requires CCC districts to maintain a student equity plan for specific groups based on gender, race/ethnicity, disability, foster youth status, veteran status, and low-income status, but not for LGBTQ+ students.

2014
The MiraCosta College Gay Straight Alliance endows an annual $1,000 GSA Student Scholarship, by raising more that $25,000.

2015
De Anza College hosts the first Queer & Now Conference.

2016
Mt. San Antonio College, San Joaquin Delta College, and Sierra College hire professional staff to provide LGBTQ+ resources.

2017
The LGBTQIA+ Caucus of the Academic Senate for CCC is established.

2017
AB 1018 adds LGBTQ+ students to campus equity plans in the CCC system.

2017
The MiraCosta College became the first college to successfully endow an annual scholarship for transgender students.  

2017
The CCC + LGBTQ+ Summit, hosted by UC Riverside, brings together CCC students, faculty, staff, administrators, and advocates to support and create resources for LGBTQ people in the system.

2018

American River College, Irvine Valley College, and MiraCosta College hire professional staff to provide LGBTQ+ resources.

2019
On the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, June 28, 2019, MiraCosta College becomes the first college to successfully endow an annual scholarship for Queer and Trans People of Color.

2019

Los Rios Community College District provides a one year assignment to the American River College Pride Center Coordinator to ensure the district policies and procedures are inclusive of LGBTQIA+ faculty, staff, and students.  

2019 
CCC-LGBTQ-COMMUNITY Listserv established.  

2019
UC Riverside hosts the 2nd CCC + LGBTQ+ Summit.

2021
American River College, with direct support from the Chancellor’s Office, hosts the 3rd CCC LGBTQ+ Summit online.

2022
The 4th CCC LGBTQ+ Summit is hosted online. Regional networks in alignment with the CCCCO Foundation are established.
